Auto Insurance

If you own a car and you intend driving it, you will need insurance. There are millions of cars on the roads and this means that there are thousands of auto insurance companies that will gladly insure you. Insurance rates vary from one company to another and the best deals are to be found on the Internet.

After you have selected a company, make sure to read their policy very carefully, especially the lines in small print. The policy will be boring to read but this is the only way to find out what you are covered for in the event of an accident or a claim. Never assume anything.

Auto insurance is expensive and it is only natural that we tend to choose the cheapest company, but beware and make sure you are fully covered against all eventualities. There is not much point in being covered for accident and not for theft. A great offer on a low premium may mean that various restrictions and conditions will apply in the policy. You may find that in the event of making a claim, you will have to pay an enormous excess.

You will be most upset to find out after the event that your Auto insurance is not as comprehensive as you thought it was. Look at this example: your car is stolen and your valuable laptop and golf clubs were in it at the time and have gone. Auto insurance policies often have a limit covering valuables in the vehicle. This is clearly to keep premiums down and attract new customers, but what a blow it is when you find out too late! We all believe that ‘an accident is not going to happen to me because I drive carefully’ but that’s not much help when you are left uncovered in a particular loss.

You must first of all think about the scope of cover you require. If your car is expensive, you need your insurance to be fully comprehensive, meaning that the insurance will cover you for damage to other parties in the event of an accident and also cover the cost of damage rendered to your own car.

There is an alternative: third party fire and theft, which will only cover you for damage and injury to other parties. In this case you bear your own costs for the damage to your own car. This may be a good alternative solution if your car is not worth a great deal and the difference in the cost of comprehensive auto insurance and third party is considerable and you don’t mind suffering the loss of your own car in the event of major damage.
